Toolden has been selling a wide variety of tools and accessories for nearly 30 years and recently took its one millionth online order. This followed a replatforming in 2020 to BigCommerce for its B2C store as well as BigCommerce B2B Edition for trade sales.
The business has strong plans for growth built around a wider selection of products offered through a better-performing website. However, its previous platform was holding back these ambitions because it was not only difficult to work with, it offered virtually none of the features or easy API integrations a modern retailer can expect from a cloud-native, SaaS operator, such as BigCommerce.
Toolden’s ecommerce journey started out in 2016 by selling through eBay and Amazon. Results were encouraging enough to build its own bespoke website. However, the experience was far from easy. Constant maintenance was expensive, as was needing to rely on a developer to make changes to pages or the site.
“At first we tried a custom website, but the management of it was a nightmare so we had to find a solution that was sustainable moving forward. This is how we came across BigCommerce,” said Eddie Grovu, Growth & Ecommerce Director at Toolden.

The company realised it needed to move to a cloud-native SaaS platform that would handle security and maintenance on its behalf. A list of requirements was drawn up and in a shoot-out with Shopify, BigCommerce was the clear winner, based on platform functionality and price.
“BigCommerce has allowed us to grow from a small, local operation to serving a global audience. The native functionality of the platform and having a seamless integration to our ERP is a game changer for us,” said Grovu. “The most important aspect of BigCommerce’s platform is its APIs because it allows us to link to most of the applications the company uses, including Google Shopping by Sales and Order for product feed management, Klaviyo for email marketing, and Trustpilot for customer reviews.”
Toolden’s heritage was in trade and public authority sales before it moved into the B2C market. This meant it is now seeking sales in two very different markets, and so needs separate sites to appeal to both DIY enthusiasts and business users. This prompted the company to use the BigCommerce B2B Edition for its long list of business-specific features. Eddie Grovu reveals the move has been highly successful.
“It's easy for me and my colleagues to go in the back-end and set up profiles for individual companies,” he says. “We’ve got individual pricing for each account and we’ve also done some custom work to offer credit, with individual limits, for each customer. It has made our life easier because B2B customers don't have to phone sales reps to place orders. It’s reduced a lot of labour time in the office.”
Toolden’s ambitious growth plans has seen it double the number of products it sell online from 30,000 to 60,000 in just the past four years. This has been a combination of reaching out to new customers, to embrace home uses as well as professionals, and widening its range. To add so many products under another platform would be very time-consuming but Eddie Grovu reveals BigCommerce has made it easy for non-developers to update the site at speed.
“I still talk to people who are on platforms where they have to use developers to add new pages, which is obviously very costly and time-consuming,” he says. “I can go in with BigCommerce and list 10,000 products within half an hour. It’s a user-friendly, self-service platform where you're capable of not only just launching a product and the margin, but also setting up the back-end operation and administration of the website.”

Since making the move to BigCommerce, Toolden has hit a massive milestone in its ecommerce journey by taking its millionth order in 2024. Over the same period, from 2020 to 2024, it has more than doubled the number of products on offer to more than 60,000.
The result on revenue has been particularly impressive. In 2020, sales stood at £12.6m but in 2024 they have rocketed to £36.7m.
“That’s around 200% growth,” enthuses Eddie. “There are obviously operational constraints on our growth, such as building warehousing facilities, but 2024 has been particularly strong, we’re actually averaging around 32% growth year-on-year.”

The Toolden team has relaunched the site, with new features and different UX features, three times since it first launched on BigCommerce. Always keen to experiment, Eddie Grovu reveals there are big plans in 2025 to work with a new “search and merch” tool, and its smart use of AI to personalise recommendations, firmly in the mix.
Possible expansion into new marketplaces is also on the agenda. The company has launched the industry first kit builder which allows customers to build custom power tool in real time, and has had a lot of success on eBay and expects to launch on new partner retailing sites in 2025.
Another major plan for 2025 is the opening of its first physical store, to be located in the same county as its headquarters, Aberdeenshire.
